ABSTRACT WRITING

You can see one of the buildings in the middle of the mountain when you arrive along the winding, rough road. Next to the building, along the forest road where the end is not visible, the beautiful scenery that cannot be expressed is spread out in front of you.
This year in our Spatial fabrication studio 2, we are asked to design the building “Arataki visitor center”, which located in Waitakere Ranges. The day I visited Arataki visitor center; I had a lot of different thoughts after I visited there. I just thought that I could just change the building pretty. But after the visit, I had to break down those birth rooms for a while and figure out how to express the beauty of the place and the feelings I felt. Therefore, I have come with the idea of designing some new feature to the deck area, and the reason I have choose deck is that I had the biggest inspiration from the visitor center. The main idea like to show from the design is the how it can render the beauty and the feeling that I felt and draw People's attention and willing to come to this place to increase the number of visitors. Form the source, the Arataki visitor center is well known as the place people can go for hiking, but for some people going for long walk could be to much for them, so design a short pathway to let people feels like their on hiking and being close to natural, it could increase the fun of walk along the deck and enjoy the view that provide form natural. However, there are other place that holds more informative and historical, but I have chosen outside area because I thought it would be easier for people to come closer and more accessible to people. I will design the way to enjoy the environment and nature more easily and enjoy the scenery of the place, and I do not know how the design will come, but I hope that my intention is conveyed properly.

CONCEPT

My main concept of my design is the connection between people and Natural; implicate the Wairuatanga which is one of core Maori Values in Te aranga Principles, which it the immutable spiritual connection between people and their environments

THEATER SEATS DECK

Creating small movie theater is the one of the strong ideas, because movie theater is the place where people seat for at least for an hour to watch movie and take time. Due to having theater seat, visitor center could run event like watching sunrise and sunset, and I think many tourists will like them, because New Zealand is one of the countries where the sun rises first. Also, by creating the relaxing seats people can spend more time to see what them is around and feel one step closer to natural. I choose to create seat because I felt like there are not enough seat to seat and spend time, so here is the reason that I choose theater seat to add on deck. Also, the seat will be facing toward to the lower Nihotupu reservoir which is the view of the huge lake and the mountains around the ‘Arataki visitor center’. Personally, this view is the favorite part of the site.

FORESTRY PATHWAY

To spend more time on walk around the deck area, and I added a bark in the floor to create the texture when people are walking through. I decide to use bark is that bark can create two texture which is depends on weather, when the weather is dry it will create cracking sound of dry bark and when is wet it could make the texture of muddiness.

PROCESS OF MAKING DIGITAL MODEL

I have used Rhino to make my digital model. I have used plan photo of Arataki visitor centre and scaled up the size of the photo to make the scale of 1:100. It was successful process which showed clearly what I am designing, and I could fix my mistake on the process. Personally, making a digital model is better than starting with the concept paper model.

RENDERED DIGITAL MODEL

At the moment the seats are not fully rendered, and the direction of the texture is wrong, and I will find out why it happens and learn to fix them.

TWO  DIFFERENT SECTIONS

  1. For the section view of pathway, I cut it out the bit of the pathway to show the contraction of it. Because pathway built up in pattern, so I think it will fully explain the method of how this is built. On this renders bark is not showing, but I will be added on the development of rendering.

  2. This is section I had made, and it is also showing a part of the theatre seats deck, because I have work with the scale of 1:10 and I find out that file is getting too big. Therefore, I keep up to the main part I want to show, and it is the contraction of the deck. Also, I wanted to make section that easily understandable.

FINAL RENDERED PHOTOS

This is the final render I have done and add trees to give the mood of it is on the forest (Waitakere ranges), and I have added on photo I took on the day we visited the Arataki visitor centre. I think it was successful render, because it is well mixed with my concept of “the connection between people and Natural; implicate the Wairuatanga which is one of core Maori Values in Te aranga Principles, which it the immutable spiritual connection between people and their environments”.

TWO DIFFERENT 1:10 MODEL

1. Pathway section 2. Theater seats deck

This 1:10 model help people understand how it will can be built and the contraction of it. I added acrylic sheet with section on it to let people understand which part is I am showing.
